DAY 1️⃣: BIG CIRCUIT AND SUNSET
Start at 8:00 am, and the driver will pick you up from your hotel or guesthouse to explore the Big Circuit. This tour takes you to several temples located outside the main Angkor Archaeological Park. The itinerary includes the following sites:
1. Preah Khan temple: Preah Khan is a vast temple complex built in the 12th century. It was dedicated to King Jayavarman VII’s father and served as a Buddhist monastery and educational institution. Explore its grand halls, galleries, and intricate carvings.
2. Neak Pean temple: Neak Pean is a unique temple situated on an artificial island in the middle of a large water reservoir. It symbolizes the mythical Himalayan lake known for its healing properties. Marvel at its tranquil setting and central sanctuary.
3. Ta Som temple: Ta Som is a small temple known for its picturesque entrance gate covered in ancient tree roots. It features impressive carvings and offers a peaceful atmosphere for exploration.
4. East Mebon temple: East Mebon is a temple-mountain dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. It is known for its large elephant sculptures and intricate stone carvings. Admire the craftsmanship of the ancient Khmer artisans.
5. Pre Rup temple: Pre Rup is a temple with a pyramid-like structure that offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It is often visited at sunset but can be explored during the day as well. Enjoy the architectural beauty and climb to the top for breathtaking views.
6. Banteay Kdei temple: Banteay Kdei is a Buddhist temple known for its intricate carvings, galleries, and hidden corners. Take your time to wander through its corridors and courtyards, appreciating the details of its design.
7. Prasat Kravan temple: Prasat Kravan is a unique temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is known for its five brick towers, each containing impressive bas-reliefs depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. Take a closer look at the intricate carvings and appreciate the temple’s cultural significance.
End the day by witnessing a stunning sunset at Phnom Bakheng, a popular temple hill that offers panoramic views of the Angkor Archaeological Park.
DAY 2️⃣: SMALL CIRCUIT AND SUNRISE
Start at 5:00 am, and the driver will pick you up from your hotel or guesthouse to witness the magical sunrise at Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument. The Small Circuit tour explores the central Angkor Archaeological Park and includes the following sites:
1. Angkor Wat temple: Angkor Wat is an architectural masterpiece and the most famous temple in Cambodia. Built in the 12th century, it was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu and later transformed into a Buddhist temple. Marvel at its grandeur, intricate carvings, and stunning architecture.
2. Angkor Thom temple: (Bayon, Baphuon, Phimeanakas, Elephant Terrace, Leper King Terrace): Angkor Thom was the last capital of the Khmer Empire. Within its walls, you’ll find several notable sites, including the Bayon temple with its iconic smiling faces, the Baphuon temple, Phimeanakas temple, the Elephant Terrace adorned with intricate carvings, and the Leper King Terrace featuring unique statues.
3. Chau Say Thevoda & Thommanon temple: Chau Say Thevoda and Thommanon are small yet elegant temples dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu. They showcase intricate carvings and exquisite architectural details.
4. Ta Keo temple: Ta Keo is an unfinished temple mountain dedicated to Lord Shiva. Despite being incomplete, it remains an impressive sight with its towering structure and massive sandstone blocks.
5. Ta Prohm temple: Ta Prohm is famous for its atmospheric beauty, as it has been left largely in its natural state, with trees and roots intertwining with the temple ruins. It gained additional fame after being featured in the movie “Tomb Raider.”
DAY 3️⃣: OUTSIDE CIRCUIT
Start at 8:00 am, and the driver will pick you up from your hotel or guesthouse to explore sites located outside the main Angkor Archaeological Park. The itinerary includes the following:
1. Banteay Srei temple: Banteay Srei is a smaller temple complex renowned for its intricate and delicate stone carvings. It is considered a jewel of Khmer artistry. Admire the detailed craftsmanship and vibrant colors of the carvings.
2. Beng Mealea temple: Beng Mealea is a temple engulfed by the jungle, providing an adventurous and mystical atmosphere. Explore its hidden passages, fallen stones, and overgrown vegetation, which transport you back in time.
3. Roluos Group: (Lolei, Preah Ko, Bakong):The Roluos Group is a collection of early Angkor temples located outside the main Angkor Archaeological Park. It consists of three main temples:
– Lolei: Lolei is a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva. It features four brick towers surrounded by a moat. Admire the intricate carvings and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
– Preah Ko: Preah Ko is one of the oldest temples in the Angkor area and was dedicated to King Indravarman I’s ancestors. It consists of six brick towers, each housing a statue of a bull, which symbolizes Nandi, the sacred mount of Shiva.
– Bakong: Bakong is a temple mountain dedicated to Shiva. It was the state temple of King Indravarman I and is known for its impressive architecture and intricate carvings. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the surrounding area.
4. Tonle Sap Lake: After exploring the temples, you’ll visit Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. There are two main floating villages you can choose to visit:
– Kampong Phluk village: Kampong Phluk is a quieter and less touristy floating village. Here, you can experience the authentic lifestyle of the locals, explore the flooded forest, and witness the seasonal changes in the water levels.
DAY 4️⃣: PREAH VIHEAR AND KOH KER
Start early in the morning to embark on a longer journey to two significant temple sites located outside Siem Reap:
1. Preah Vihear temple: Preah Vihear temple is situated on the Dangrek Mountains, close to the Thai-Cambodian border. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding plains. The temple is a masterpiece of Khmer architecture and is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.
Please note that access to Preah Vihear temple from the Thai side may require additional arrangements and border crossing procedures.
2. Koh Ker temple: Koh Ker is a remote temple complex that served as the capital of the Khmer Empire for a brief period in the 10th century. It features several temples, including Prasat Thom, which is the most prominent and stands as a seven-tiered pyramid. Explore the temples and enjoy the serene and less crowded atmosphere.
Both Preah Vihear and Koh Ker temples are located quite a distance from Siem Reap, so the journey may take a significant portion of the day. It is recommended to start early to allow ample time for exploration.
